We've Done It Again! Saturday the 25 th of October saw 19 horses and their riders taking the road to Kelsall Hill for the last of the outdoor qualifiers, the Cross Country Trial. The open qualifier started the day in good weather, which the weathermen said would remain until late afternoon.( typically the heavens opened at 10 am!) and saw two SDRC teams doing their stuff . Team 1 suffered the initial setback of having 1 team member unable to take part owing to a breakdown , which resulted in the remaining team members all having scores that would count- No pressure!! Fortunately nobody buckled, the result being three clears only time mattered. Team 2 was more straightforward, four combinations starting, all completing, three with clear rounds. So there they were both teams clear with only time faults separating them. Now the agonising wait for the scores! In due course results were posted and Lo and behold Team 2 were in first place and team 1 were in second spot. Individually, Vikki Cliffe took 4 th and 6 th places whilst Dean Price took 5 th . So yet another visit to a championship beckons, possibly for both teams. Well done guys! With the open competition over, the scene was set for the novice sections which were accompanied by incessant rain – damn the weathermen! Two teams of four riders and one individual braved the elements to take part. Unfortunately the individual was spun at passport control owing to a misunderstanding over the vaccination rules. Again it needs reinforcing that anybody taking part in qualifiers MUST check that flu vacs are in order. If need be check with the chef d'equipe for that team. Current rules are posted on the website. Though not quite aspiring to the heights of their open counterparts I take my hat off to all of the novice riders who undertook the event in the most atrocious of conditions. Worth particular mentions were the rounds of Susan Norbury who had to change mounts at a late hour her usual horse going lame on Friday, Linda Lee going clear, causing Dean to jump up and down whooping with every fence cleared and Mandy Beddin on Pancake who shot out of the start box like muck off a shovel and continued as on a mission, to post one of the fastest times of the day. The final outcome was that the one team was 5 th . Louise Roberts was 2 nd individually and possibly qualifying for the championships, Lisa Goodwin coming in 5 th . Again well done to all of them! If this was not enough we then had the pairs Beryl Matthews on “Baby Boo” on her last ride before retiring –again!! Yeh, yeh, yawn, yawn heard it all before, and Helen Ratcliff on Jack. In fine weather they tore round the track to the cheers of the club supporters, traversing the dressing fence in unison, finishing closest to the optimum time to win the pairs and join the trek to the championships. Thus ended another excellent qualifier for Shrewsbury and District.
