Show Jumping

Show jumping is probably the glamour equestrian discipline, more of its stars are known by the general public and the "harvey smith" is a term defined in the dictionary.Even the horses are graded on financial winnings.

Together with dressage SDRC has run show jumping clinics for many years. The main competitions run by the club include the Connie Wynn (the ultimate competition for the clubs' show jumpers) and the Xmas competition. There are a number of trophies awarded for show jumping prowess.

Over the years the club has seen a lot of success at various levels. Many riders have used the training offered by the club as a stepping stone to affiliated events.

Please note that Wednesday night training clinics are, until further notice, being arranged by Vicki Cliffe and Nick Furniss. If interested phone Vicki to see if there are spaces available. Vicki,s number is in the newsletter members list.

BRC WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS, HARTPURY, NR GLOUCESTER

2008 UPDATE………………………

Oh how lucky we were that Saturday 5 th April dawned cold and bright as nature threatened the ultimate April Fool of snow for later in the day. The venue for the BRC Winter Championships as been greatly enhanced now by the improved parking and access not to mention the fantastic extended surfaces and new Indoor Arena.

For the first time a Novice Team Dressage Championship was held at the same time as the Novice Indoor Team Show Jumping Championship, with the seniors performing on Saturday and the Juniors on Sunday. With some 250 horses and ponies competing from across Great Britain over the weekend Hartpury College is probably now the only venue that can manage the numbers.

The SDRC Show Jumping Team of Selina Dale, Beryl Matthews, Jenny Howell and Heather Tate had all been in serious training for the last month but, with the exception of Beryl and Boela, got off to a slow start in the first round with a mixture of competition nerves and “Senior moments”. Out of the 25 teams entered 10 finished with no faults so we all knew we had to raise our game for the second round. Encouragement from our travelling head lads, Chef D'equipe Simone Cooper, strong coffee, bacon butties and excellent cakes did the trick for the second round which we finished with no faults. However, our first round proved too expensive so no placings for us this year. There were five teams with double clears who then jumped off for the National Title. Full results are available on the BRC website.

It is a great achievement to have qualified for the Championships as only one team for every 20 entered at Area level is invited to attend. The atmosphere is tremendous and it is wonderful to be involved so if you ever get the chance to go, either with dobbin, as a helper or just as a spectator, do take the opportunity.

Thanks go to all those who help and support the teams; it takes so much more than just the horses and jockeys to bring a team together. I hope new member and helper for the day Mandi Quinton and her daughter Lisa enjoyed their trip south with us and we look forward to seeing them at Club activities again soon. Lastly, special thanks to Simone who fields the paperwork, chivvies us up, nannies us, and generally brings the whole day together.
