A pleasant and exciting day culminated in one of the intermediate teams comprising of Nick Furniss, Vikki Cliffe, Beryl Matthews and Sarah Williams, coming second to Nantwich RC thereby hopfully qualifying for the Championships to be held at Lincoln. This was no mean feat bearing in mind that Nantwich was placed first in every team competition. Other notable performances included Jo Rawlinson and Helen Ratcliff both riding double clears and therefore getting into the individual jump off. Jo rode a steady clear wrapping up a creditable performance. Helen completed a very fast round which would have been placed, but unfortunately clipped the last fence to finish on 4 faults.

Thanks to all of the club members and their connections who made it an excellent day all round. Particular thanks to Nick for sorting it all out.

Show Jumping

Show jumping is probably the glamour equestrian discipline, more of its stars are known by the general public and the "harvey smith" is a term defined in the dictionary.Even the horses are graded on financial winnings.

Together with dressage SDRC has run show jumping clinics for many years. The main competitions run by the club include the Connie Wynn (the ultimate competition for the clubs' show jumpers) and the Xmas competition. There are a number of trophies awarded for show jumping prowess.

Over the years the club has seen a lot of success at various levels. Many riders have used the training offered by the club as a stepping stone to affiliated events.

Please note that Wednesday night training clinics are, until further notice, being arranged by Trish, we are however looking for someone to take over (see March Newsletter.

SHOW JUMPING DEMO BY KIM WEBSTER

Having recently been on John Whittaker and Tim Stockdale's show jumping courses Kim kindly came to Prescott EC to cascade what she had learned to club members.

We gathered on Monday 23 rd . March at 7.30pm to full BSJA competition course.

Kim spent the first 20 minutes at the first fence discussing the for's and againsts. This is the place where the class is won or lost since your approach – impulsion collection and rhythm will affect the rest of your round.

As we gradually walked round the course Kim told us that it had been deliberately built to make you use your legs! Not enough leg to make a good turn into the combination may result with you getting away with first effort but not the rest. This would result in your horse losing confidence for the rest of the show! As we watched our “guinea pigs “ this became all too apparent. The unrelated distance fences had been placed 8 feet in from the track so that riders couldn't use the school walls to turn their horses. LEGS was the name of the game!!.

The evening was a most enjoyable one and a great way to practice and everyone thought that the evening had been a very valuable exercise. Most of us may know what we should do BUT do we do it?

A very big thank you to Kim for giving up her time and also to the “ guinea pigs “ Phillipa Finnegan, Lynda Lee, Trish Bridge , and Heather Oakley.
